Saw it's relative the Capella 616 in my neighbourhood last year, but here's it's rotary powered brother the RX-2! [link]
Many JDM classics I've drawn were Toyota's, but there are other Japanese car brands coming this way some day as well.
It's actually my 1st car drawing (without a girl beside it) of a classic Mazda, but it's my 2nd of a rotary powered car. This is my 1st one: [link] (I'll make a better drawing of that car some day, the linked one is a piece of crap)
The RX-2 was barely sold here in Holland, but instead of the rotary wankel engine did we have the Capella 616 with a 1.6 liter NA and 1.8 liter VB 4 cylinder engine on the European market. (not to mention that rotary engines are pretty sensitive and sometimes instable as well) <--- What I just told there is not a joke, I'm telling you guys this from my own experience with an RX-7 SA22C and an RX-8 when I needed to work on those at school!
So IMO, rotary engines,,,, I'll stay away from them and won't throw them into another car that easily! I'll think twice before I'm gonna do that.
The Capella/RX-2 S122A was introduced back in 1970 and was supposed to succeed the Familia Presto Rotary Coupe/R100 and the Luce R130 in the 70's. Many rumors are going that this car was designed by Bertone , but I have very strong doubts about that. It's true, some Mazdas are indeed their design, but not just all of them. Another reason is that I don't believe in rumors though. The car was available as 2 door coupes and as 4 door sedans and was powered by a 12A and a 12B Rotary wankel engine (which produces a massive torque of 130 bhp and a topspeed of 190 km/h or 120 mph). There were totally 225,004 units of the RX-2 sold between 1970 and 1978. (when it's production ended)
Today, finding an original RX-2 in Holland is nearly impossible. Many of these S122A bodies are actually modified 616's with a 12A or 13B under the hood, and I've never seen a real RX-2 in real live before.
Totally spend: 5 days, it was really really hard to draw it right, but it's end result sure looks kickass!
Hope you guys like it!
